How much do you really know about the tampons you use?

According to research, a woman in the United States will go through an average of 11,000 tampons in her lifetime. However, when it comes to choosing tampons, when is the last time you paid attention to the ingredients they contain? Chances are - never.

Since the FDA considers feminine care products to be "medical devices", they do not require manufacturers to disclose all of the ingredients on the labels.

This lack of disclosure from mainstream product brands keeps us in the dark about what we are actually putting inside of our bodies.

So, what are conventional tampons really made of?

Research indicates that conventional tampons contain many harmful ingredients, like rayon, dioxins, bleach, and chemical fragrances. Moreover, it has been proven that 94% of cotton used in tampons is genetically modified and sprayed with pesticides! EW! Since vaginas are known to be the most absorbent parts of our body, we should be especially careful about what goes inside of them! Anything that even touches the sensitive skin around your vagina, will be quickly absorbed into your bloodstream and then distributed around your body. In effect, those chemical ingredients from traditional tampons can drastically increase your risk of Toxic Shock Syndrome, also known as TSS. It's symptoms include high fever, rash, diarrhea, achy muscles, hormone disruption, just to name a few!

Care about the environment? Time to ditch traditional pads! Due to Infinicel - the extra absorbent chemical they use - one pad is equivalent to as many as four plastic bags worth of waste! That's 60 plastic bags each period.

Luckily, there are healthier and more sustainable alternatives.

Menstrual Cups are all the rage lately, and for good reason! Made out of 100% chemical free silicone, they completely eliminate any chances of TSS. Like the OrganiCup Menstrual Cup, which can be worn all-day and all-night without leak worries. It’s also reusable and can last for years, saving you hundreds of $ on tampons, and saving our planet! Kind of a win-win.

If you just can't get with the menstrual cup trend, don't worry, there are other options out there. More and more new brands now offer natural tampons and pads completely free of toxins, such as Rael. Their tampons are made of 100% certified organic cotton, which is super soft and gentle. They also have a rounded tip for comfortable insertion and expand width-wise for reliable leak protection.

So ladies, the time to ditch your traditional tampons is now! It has never been easier!
