Summer = travel. And what's the best thing about travel? The food... duh! Even as a vegan, you want to enjoy the local cuisine to the fullest, and now you can!
Our guide will help you pick your next foodie destination to fulfill your wildest veggie fantasies! So, what are the world's most vegan friendly cities? Here we go!
#5 Toronto, Canada Vegetarianism has been on the rise in some of the largest cities in Canada. Toronto is one city that constantly has a new wave of vegan restaurants and stores popping up around town. The city offers unique and creative vegan options ranging from free vegan food, vegan gourmet events, and beet burgers, just to name a few. Toronto is also known to hosts a series of vegetarian festivals and events, such as Veggielicious, Toronto’s plant-based culinary celebration, and the Veg Food Fest, the largest vegetarian festival in North America.
#4 Chennai, India
As you may know, India is a super veggie-friendly country. Nearly half of it's citizens do not eat meat! Even India's President himself, Ram Nath Kovind, is a vegetarian. Chennai in particular, is widely known as Asia's veggie paradise. This is partly because it is located in South India, where people consume very little dairy and meat. Chennai is also home to India's very first gourmet vegetarian restaurant Royal Vega, located at the Five Star International Hotel, ITC Hotel.
#3 Taipei, Taiwan Since Buddhism is the dominant religion in Taiwan, most Taiwanese do not eat meat in order to respect animals and follow Buddhist practices. As of now, vegetarians and vegans have accounted for over 13% of the population in Taiwan, with a majority of them located in Taipei.
Taipei is naturally rich in fruits and vegetables. It has tons of vegan restaurants and markets located in nearly every block. At high-end vegan restaurants such as Fruitful Food, local chefs continue reinterpreting the traditional Taiwanese cuisine by combining fresh native ingredients with international flavors.
#2 Berlin, Germany
With an estimated 80,000 vegans living in this city, it's safe to say Berlin must be the vegan capital of Europe. The city boasts more than 50 vegan restaurants and vegan "meat" shops, such as Rawtastic or Let It Be. Not to mention, the endless plant-based meal options are not only convenient, but budget-friendly. The vegan movement is even overtaking the 200-year-old Oktoberfest, where vendors are beginning to offer veggie versions of the traditional German dishes we all love and want.
#1 New York, NY
Finally, we arrive at the city of our vegan dreams - New York. A paradise for gastronomes and foodies, the Big Apple has veggie options on practically every corner. From The Butcher’s Daughter or Jack’s Wife Freda for a lunch with your girlfriends to Avant Garden and Candle 79 for a romantic vegan date night. And if you're in a hurry like a real New Yorker, head over to Terri or one of the many locations of the famous vegan chain by CHOLE.
